Targeter
Targeters are devices used by Imperial forces, possessing various optical sights, range-finding or prediction systems, etc. The end result is that they allow the user to determine if a target is in range before firing. Targeters are standard equipment of the Adeptus Astartes special squads (for example - Devastators) [1], Imperial Guard's elite Storm Troopers as well as their Inquisitorial counterparts in the Ordo Malleus and Ordo Hereticus armies.[Needs Citation]
Description
Targeters use a variety of guidance cogitators, omni-sights[4a] and sensors, directly linking to a weapon's machine spirit.[5] A Targeter emits a series of invisible, infrared energy pulses. The almost instantaneous time it takes for the pulses to travel to the targeted area and back to the device is calculated by the Targeter's logic engine and high-speed clock, giving a precise range measurement.[2] Targeters are usually hardwired into a specific weapon system,[4a] those incorporated into missile launchers even feature guidance systems.[6]
A Targeter is activated by activation rune and has to be aimed at a target at least twenty metres away to accurately estimate range. It has a ranging accuracy of +/- two metres under most conditions, its maximum range dependant on target reflectivity and environmental conditions. To maximise accurate range assessments, a Targeter should be aimed at an 90° angle to the target.[2]
Known variants
Astartes Targeters
Targeters used by the Adeptus Astartes incorporate various sights and a sophisticated target-lock system, all connected to a guidance cogitator. These devices are not hardwired to a specific weapon but are fixed on the shoulders or the backpack unit of the power armour, directly connecting to the suit's general targeting systems.[3]
Hand-Held Targeter
The Hand-Held Targeter is used by most Imperial forces, most often by spotters to direct artillery fire. The small device incorporates optical zoom-sights and prediction systems to determine ranges.[4b]
